Disney Lorcana TCG: Winterspell Brings a Touch of Magic to the Coldest Season

Ravensburger has officially lifted the curtain on the next chapter of Disney Lorcana TCG, and it looks like it may be one of the game’s most charming and atmospheric sets so far. Winterspell, the eleventh major expansion for the trading card game, embraces the magic, mischief, and mystery of winter while continuing to push Disney Lorcana TCG’s story and gameplay. With brand new beloved characters, and returning fan favourites, this is what we know so far about the next set for Disney Lorcana TCG, Winterspell.

Frozen In The Inklands

The set’s narrative centers on an Elsa glimmer who attempts to freeze a strange and fast-growing vine. Her attempt goes awry and plunges the Inklands into a magical winter, covering the realm with snow and ice.

As mentioned on the Special Lorecast announcing Winterspell, it does a great job of showcasing a fresh setting and theme without losing the charm that Disney Lorcana TCG has developed over the years. Rather than framing this event as purely dangerous, Winterspell leans into the dual nature of winter itself. The frozen Inklands become a place of wonder and play as much as challenge. We see snowball fights, winter sports, and moments of warmth across the cards. It feels more like a celebration of winter than a trial to be endured when things didn’t go according to plan.

Familiar Faces In The Snow

Initially we see Elsa as the focus of Winterspell, both narratively and thematically. Her presence shapes the entire expansion, and her cards reflect her role in the events of the set. Elsa – Concerned Sister shows her concerned about her surroundings and how the vine has taken hold. However we also see the opposite where Elsa revels in her abilities and shows the confidence, authority, and expression in cards like Elsa – Ice Artisan and The Cold Never Bothered Me.

Lilo and Stitch: The Series also introduces us to the wider cast of Lilo and Stitch that we have come to love. There are going to be so many new Aliens and experiments rampaging across the Inklands getting up to who knows what sort of mischief. Angel – Experiment 624 and Reuben – Sandwich Expert mark the first times we’ve seen these two characters in Disney Lorcana TCG. Of course Stitch returns as well, taking full advantage of the winter-inspired setting to capture the fun and whimsy of the season, even swapping out his usual surfboard for a snowboard in Stitch – Carefree Snowboarder.

Possibly one of the Disney properties we’ve been most excited about for Winterspell is the debut of Pocahontas in Disney Lorcana TCG. From the cards that we’ve seen, the development team have done a great job carrying the themes of balance and peace from Pocahontas and translating them into thematic mechanics for the trading card game. Pocahontas – Peacekeeper and John Smith’s Compass for example play into this theme beautifully.

Darkwing Duck and Launchpad McQuack round out the lineup, also making their long-awaited debut in Disney Lorcana TCG. Darkwing Duck – Cool Under Pressure  and Launchpad – Trusty Sidekick are two examples of the dynamic duo, with Darkwing having the thematic ability of challenging ready villain characters.

Winter Wonders and Spectacles

The design team really took their game to the next level with Winterspell, really setting it apart from sets previous. Not only do most of the cards have that signature winter wonderland aesthetic and feel, but so too are there amazing special treatments and gorgeous card arts. The papercut art style used many of the set’s Iconic cards, including Moana – Curious Explorer and Pocahontas – Peacekeeper , is one of the expansion’s standout features. These designs resemble layered paper snowflakes, giving the cards a handcrafted look that fits the winter theme perfectly.

A Disney Lorcana TCG Set wouldn’t be complete without its signature Enchanted cards, and we’ve seen two already that show off their Frost Foil treatment. The new Ohana Means Family and Eeyore – In The Way show off the subtle icy shimmer in the artwork particularly well.

Of course booster-packs aren’t the only way to get some of these stunning new cards. There are prizes to be had just for going to your local game store and playing with your friends, or even attending the pre-releases starting from February 13. During the Lorecast we were treated to a look at the stunning pre-release promo and organised play promos that we can expect to see at local game stores going forward. We already know we’re not missing any local events during this set.

The set will also be supported by themed playmats and accessories that bring the snowy Inklands to the tabletop. The Illumineer’s Trove also returns as a wonderful collectors item, or even as a way to jumpstart your collection, bundling booster packs, storage, and themed extras into a single product.

A Season Of Cheer

Winterspell feels like a set that knows exactly what it wants to be. The characters support the story, the mechanics line up with the themes, and the presentation leans hard into the season.. Rather than leaning on spectacle alone, it seems like the designers want to encourage players to explore the set as a whole and appreciate not just the big dramatic events, but also the smaller wholesome ones as well.

With pre-release events starting as early as February 13th and the full release slated for February 20th, Winterspell is shaping up to be more than just another Lorcana expansion. It’s a great reason to bundle up, head to your local game store, crack open packs, and see where the Inklands go next. If you have been looking for a set that captures both the magic and the mood of the season, Winterspell might be the one worth gathering around.
