What to Expect at the Disney Lorcana TCG World Championship
The newest Disney Lorcana set is out – Azurite Sea! Let’s check out the most exciting cards!
We’re nearing the very first Disney Lorcana TCG World Championship, to be hosted at the Walt Disney World® Resort, and we could not be more excited. In preparation for the milestone event, we have been pouring over tournament results and carefully studying the metagame since the release of Reign of Jafar. Here is what we expect to see at the Disney Lorcana TCG World Championship.

Before diving into the specific deck lists and various tournament winners over the past couple weeks, let’s take a look at some of the most played Ink combinations.
Over the course of Disney Lorcana TCG’s history, one deck has remained a constant threat throughout each and every set. The iconic Amber/Steel “Steel Song” deck is just one of those archetypes that have remained evergreen, with consistent support and a very powerful core. Cards like Ariel – Spectacular Signer and Cinderella – Ballroom Sensation when combined with powerhouse songs like Let the Storm Rage On and A Whole New World continue to prove their worth, standing the test of time. Even Beyond the Horizon from Reign of Jafar is making their way into these decks.
However, the Amber/Steel ink combination is not limited to simply the “Steel Song” package. We’ve also seen variations of aggressive decks with low cost characters that are meant to gain lore and gain lore fast. New additions like Lady – Family Dog and Vinnie – Green Pigeon have breathed new life into this archetype. Overall since the release of Reign of Jafar, we’ve seen Amber/Steel as an Ink combination represent 25% of all the decks in recorded tournaments on Inkdecks.com
The second most represented Ink combination is Ruby/Sapphire, making up 12% of all recorded decklists since the release of Reign of Jafar. What was formerly one of the premier control Ink combinations has seen much success in two different variations. We’ve seen decks that run Tamatoa – So Shiny! And Lucky Dime time and time again building an engine of items to win the long game and extract as much value as possible. We have also seen a more “burn” focused strategy, utilizing Maui – Half-Shark and actions like A Pirate’s Life to gain lore in quick incremental bursts. Probably what’s most notable about many of these successful deck lists is that we don’t see many, if any at all, cards from Reign of Jafar. Most of these lists that are putting up great results are coasting on the consistent core they’ve built over the first 7 sets.
Rounding out the most represented Ink combinations are three pairings that all include Amethyst. Amethyst/Sapphire, Amethyst/Ruby, and Amethyst/Emerald ball hold around a 10% meta-share based on what we see from recent tournament history. Amethyst provides much needed utility and card draw to really supplement what their other Ink colour try to achieve. It’s difficult to lump the various Amethyst decks together, so let’s start breaking down some of the most successful lists we’ve seen, analyze what makes them tick, and see what we can expect to show up at the Disney Lorcana TCG World Championship.
Like we stated previously, Steel Song continues to be a force to be reckoned with. In Belgium just this weekend we saw OUD_Cobalpie make it to the grand finals of a 72 player tournament piloting the standout deck. It continues to utilize Cinderella – Ballroom Sensation and The Troubadour – Musical Narrator to play songs earlier than normal to maintain a consistent board advantage and remove opponents characters.
Reign of Jafar saw the inclusion of some new characters like Rhino – One Sixteenth Wolf and his floodborn version Rhino – Power Hamster. Playing higher cost characters and actions turns before they’re normally meant to be played is exactly what the Steel Song deck specializes in. Beyond the Horizon also sees its inclusion as yet another way to refill your hand in a somewhat limited fashion, but also as a way to really bring down decks that thrive on drawing a lot of cards like some of the Sapphire decks.
The other side of the finals that saw the Steel Song deck was EMI Alpaca piloting Amethyst/Ruby. The focus of this deck is to drop down cheap characters in the early game that can maintain card advantage such as Cherbabog’s Followers – Creatures of Evil and Diablo – Obedient Raven. Following those up we see powerful units that are utilized to maintain board control and remove key pieces of the opponent. Ursula – Mad Sea Witch, Madam Mim – Fox, and Iago, Giant Spectral Parrot are three such examples.
Once we’ve arrived in the mid-game, the deck starts playing a slew of evasive characters like Elsa – The Fifth Spirit, Peter Pan – Shadow Finder, and Genie – Wish Fulfilled. We see many tools to keep up the card advantage, and here is where Amethyst supplements its skill set to Ruby quite well. While the Ruby cards are quite adept at removing other characters, with cards like Be Prepared, Maui-Hero to All, and Brawl, we see that there aren’t many ways to generate new cards in hand. Maui – Half-Shark continues to be a dual threat with the lore gain on playing actions while also returning action cards to your hand for more card generation. We see a single copy of Hades – Ruthless Tyrant make the cut from Reign of Jafar, being another way to generate more cards, dig further into your deck, and provide an additional body on board. It being 7 cost also he can also sing Be Prepared.
Ruby/Sapphire lists have been running the iconic Lucky Dime and Tamatoa – So Shiny! for many sets now, as the deck is just so consistent and has a solid endgame plan. More recently with Maui – Half-Shark being released in set 6, we have also begun seeing this ink combination run more burn oriented game plans, seeking to get value from playing actions in a similar fashion to the steel song archetype. Recently at the Lowlands Lore Quest with over 250 players we saw Metin Pamuk run a hybrid of both gameplans, giving himself more outs and versatile win conditions. Without a sideboard in this game, this is another way to tech your deck into a wider field.
Let’s start off with the classic item engine and the benefits it affords the deck. The standard suit of blue items include four copies of Pawpsicle and Fishbone Quil. With only a single copy of Lucky Dime present, we understand the inclusion of Merlin’s Carpet Bag. Even though Tamatoa – So Shiny! is able to bring back items after he quests, sometimes you want it before. Even then, Merlin’s Carpet bag being an emergency tool to get back a destroyed dime, or to recur more items later in the game for even more value. With all the extra cards that will be put into the Inkwell, we love to see Chicha – Dedicated Mother as a tool to keep a healthy hand size. Belle – Apprentice Inventor makes a lot of sense when you can easily play her on turn one for the cost of a simple Pawpsicle.
The more “burn” package is also a force to be reckoned with. We’ve talked enough about Maui – Half-Shark and A Pirate’s Life already, but it’s safe to say that most control oriented ruby decks that aim to go for a long game will have these. They’re simply too good not to include. What adds to the deck’s inevitability however is the amount of removal in the form of Actions and Characters. Brawl, Maui – Hero to All, Sisu – Empowered Sibling, and Maleficent – Monstrous Dragon all make sure to limit your opponent’s play options and maintain control of the game. All around this deck looks like the longer the game goes on, the harder it will be for your opponent to win.
When fast with a late game focused deck like the previous one, sometimes you need something that’s low to the ground and finishes games quickly. Coming in first place at the Lowlands Lore Quest is an Amethyst/Emerald deck piloted by TSR_Prymor. When your opponent is looking to spend the first few turns playing their items, and setting up for big Tamatoas, sometimes you have just enough time to flood the board with small characters and race to 20 lore. Here we see Cursed Merfolk – Ursula’s Handiwork, Flynn Rider – Charming Rogue, and Pegasus – Gift for Hercules as three low cost characters that are either hard to remove or punish your opponent for removing them.
New Reign of Jafar cards Pull the Lever! And Wrong Lever! Are beautiful tools to remove any characters of your opponent’s that would take out yours, and keep the pressure on. Kit Cloudkicker – Tough Guy and the host of Madam Mim and Merlin cards also allow you to return cheap characters to hand and replay them so they enter ready and cant be easily challenged. Go Go Tomago – Darting Dynamo and Merlin – Goat provide some inevitable lore gain to close out the game.
While we may not see the full discard package that we often see with Amethyst/Emerald in this rendition of the deck, we may expect to see more of it at the Disney Lorcana TCG World Championship. Cards like Prince John – Greediest of All synergise quite well when paired with emerald staples like Ursula – Deceiver and We Don’t Talk About Bruno.
Axion Now recently hosted a large 162 player event in the UK, and we saw Eric Steedman take down the entire Mega Illumineers Cup on his Amethyst/Steel Tempo deck. We have a more adaptable style of deck that can extract value from more aggressive decks and stop them in their tracks, but can also rush to 20 lore faster than most would expect should it find itself against a more late game oriented deck.
We see the classic early-game characters many other Amethyst Decks utilize, with inclusions like Chernabog’s Followers – Creatures of Evil, Diablo – Obedient Raven, and Magic Broom – Illuminary Keeper. These are just great for any deck to start out with as they apply immediate pressure early and can be used for card draw later. When facing against other low cost decks, we have Calhoun – Marine Sergeant, who can easily remove other low cost creatures and reward you with lore while doing so.
The deck seamlessly transitions into the mid-game, dropping threats like Genie – Wish Fulfilled, and Merlin – Goat to keep the lore coming. Strength of a Raging Fire is great for removing almost any threat you come across with the amount of characters you’ll be playing. Instead of playing Friends on the Other Side, we see Doc – Bold Knight being able to draw two cards when played. Additionally you can return him to your hand with the various Madam Mim cards to constantly reuse his effect. Like most decks, you’ll still want to try and close out the game quite quickly, before more late-game decks have a chance to stabilize. Pete – Games Referee comes in clutch when you expect a Be Prepared or other devastating actions to clear your characters.
