Partnership Spotlight: Malmö Game Week
One of the core missions of Fanfinity is to create meaningful fan experiences and grow an ever inclusive community. We absolutely love it when communities rise together to celebrate their favourite hobbies and passions. That’s why we are excited to partner with Malmö Game Week, who will bring you a host of different TCG tournaments – and more. With this year’s edition less than a month away, here is everything we love about Malmö Game Week.

What is Malmö Game Week
This coming edition of Malmö Game Week (30 – 31 August) looks to showcase some of the largest gaming events and activities we’ve yet to see in the Nordics. Developers, creators, and competitors alike are coming in from around the world to join in and spread their passion for gaming. Not only are they hosting a variety of activities, workshops, and lessons, but we’ve been fortunate enough to partner together to launch some amazing tournaments for your favourite trading card games. We’re going to see world class players from across the globe coming together, whether it’s for Magic: The Gathering, Disney Lorcana, Star Wars: Unlimited, and many more.
Complete Quest Log: Every Activity at Malmö Game Week
Malmö Game Week (MGW) started off as a personal project from a dedicated group of people that saw Malmö as a great gaming hub for the Nordic countries. Now, Malmö Game Week serves as one of the gaming communities largest gathering points of the year. It’s a place where passionate gamers and creators come together to showcase their hobbies and share in their passions.
We’re expecting to see an epic two-day gaming festival packed with card tournaments, digital and analog gaming, cosplay, live stage events, creative markets, and immersive role-playing and tabletop areas.
Meeples, Maps, and Miniatures
One of the largest draws of Malmö Game Week is the vast amount of group activities for friends and family alike. You can expect to see a wide variety of boardgames, miniature activities, and many groups for social deduction games present during the event. Malmö Brädspelsförening (MBF) will be hosting many activities with the focus of growing a more inclusive and fun community.
All weekend long, you’ll be able to join in on panels and discussions with Board Game Designers in Malmö. Play in tournaments hosted by GEN42 in their hit game HIVE. And for those seeking a thrilling mystery, you can expect to see sessions of Blood on the Clocktower run all weekend long. Companies like Asmodee and Alga will be hosting stands with several of their hit board-games to try out and play as well.
For those of you wanting to dip your toes into the world of Tabletop Role-playing Games (RPGs), you can attend as many demos and play sessions to your heart’s desire. No experience is needed, just bring your curiosity and sense of adventure.
Rollspelsällskapet and Game Makers Malmö are two of your welcome hosts for all your teamwork and strategy needs. Brads Spelcafé will also be running trials to test your luck, skill, and cooperation in challenging Dungeons and Dragons based puzzles.
Press Start to Play
Malmö Game Week will be featuring a large digital arena. Ranging from retro arcade machines all the way to the latest VR experiences, you’re guaranteed to find whatever you’re looking for. And then even some things you weren’t.
Ung DataTjej are supplying a host of consoles for participants of all ages to come out and use for free! Playstations, Xbox consoles, and the all new Nintendo Switch 2 are all available to try out any game you desire.
Looking for something more immersive? A collection of VR games will be at the ready for you to jump right in the action. Trigono will also bring full racing rigs to Malmö Game Week, allowing players to hop into hyper-realistic setups, and tear down the digital track, fully immersed in a thrilling high-speed racing environment.
We’ll also see a host of Indie developers and other companies showcasing some sneak peeks at upcoming projects – make sure to stay tuned for those.
And for the more competitively-minded of you all, there will be several tournaments featuring the most action-packed fighting games of recent history: Test your metal in one-on-one matches in Guilty Gear : Strive, Street Fighter 6, and Tekken 8. Also, stay tuned for an upcoming tournament featuring a Mystery Game.
Combat Phase at Malmö – Declare Attacks
Possibly the part of Malmö Game Week we are MOST excited for are the various Trading Card Game tournaments. No matter what game you prefer to play, what level of competitiveness you’re looking for, there will be events for you.
In general, MGW will be hosting Nordic Card Show with over 25 vendors, each supplying goodies for any and all TCGs you can imagine. On top of that, we’ll see large stores come down and make sure there is enough product to go around. Whatever the IP, there will be something for you.
Even if you’re just learning how to play, we suspect most stands will have dedicated learn-to-play areas where you can experience any new game you want. For our more entrenched players, we’ve partnered with Malmö Game Week to bring some really exciting TCG events.
Disney Lorcana Open
Starting off with the Disney Lorcana TCG, we’re gearing up to see one of, if not the largest, Disney Lorcana tournament in the Nordics to date. Players from across 17 different countries are already signed up to join the Disney Lorcana Open, with many more on the way. There are amazing prizes to be won, including a First Chapter Uncut Sheet and fully covered flight and hotel for an upcoming Disney Lorcana Challenge!
The main event will kick off on Saturday with 9 rounds of Swiss in a best of 3 format. Sunday will cut to the top 64. Important to note is that only sets 1 through 8 are legal for this event. However, if you didn’t make day 2 of the event, everyone is welcome to join the Set 9 pre-release and experience Fabled for the first time. Alongside a full weekend of fun Disney related activities, you’ll never find yourself with nothing to do.
Star Wars: Unlimited
We have partnered up with Malmö Game Week to help bring you the largest Scandinavian Star Wars: Unlimited event to date. Kortspelsförening and The Nordic Takedown Podcast presents the SWU Open 2025 at Malmö Game Week.
With over 10,000 euro in prize support, there is much to be won over the course of the two day event. Up to 9 rounds of Swiss in a best of three format followed by a cut to day 2. Should there be enough players attending, you may even walk away with an all expense paid trip to the next Star Wars: Unlimited Regional Qualifier!
For those who don’t make it to day 2, there is a “Best of the Rest” tournament with even more prizes available. However, with every tournament ticket purchased, you also have access to the entire convention, so feel free to explore all the activities available. Take photos with cosplayers, play board-games, watch some games, and hang out with friends new and old.
Nordic Masters 2025 – Magic: The Gathering
Mindstage is hosting the largest Northern European Magic: The Gathering tournament of the year with Nordic Masters 2025. This is an action packed weekend of Magic across all formats. Alongside the Modern and Legacy main events, there is a fully packed schedule of side events including Standard, Limited, and cEDH among many others.
There is a prize pool of over 150,000 Swedish Crowns divided amongst the two main events. On top of that, the Modern event is one of our popular Destination Qualifiers. The top 8 players will qualify for the upcoming Regional Championships for Magic: The Gathering.
From Map to Mat: Navigating Malmö Game Week
Probably one of the first things to note, for those not familiar with the city of Malmö, is that getting there can be a tad confusing. The easiest way to get to Malmö, Sweden is actually to fly to Denmark. Yes, we recommend that if you’re traveling from further away the most time and cost efficient way to reach Malmö is simply to fly to Copenhagen and then take the train into Malmö.
When speaking to the team behind Malmö Game Week, they strongly recommended downloading the Skånetraffiken app to easily satisfy all your public transportation needs. However, Uber was noted to be very affordable and easy to use in the city.
We heard some very encouraging words from the organisers of Malmö Game Week and how much they aim to grow the community over the coming years. Last year they had over 8,000, and this year they are expecting close to 12,000. The current goal is to reach 20,000 MGW attendants by 2027 – we can’t wait to see what that will be like! With their continuous efforts to include new games and communities to create a large and welcoming space for all game fans, as well as new TCGs and other games on the rise, we are sure this goal will be met.
We are extremely excited to see how the events will unfold. There are so many events and activities that we’re already having difficulty seeing how we will do everything we want to do. Malmö Game Week looks like it’s going to be an amazing event, and we look forward to seeing you all there August 30th.
