Battle Format Evolution - Changes To Swiss Tournament Rounds

One of the biggest points of feedback from Trainers  during Championship Series 2025 was the number of Swiss rounds: Players wanted to play more rounds. For Pokémon Championship Series 2026, there will be an overhaul of the number of Swiss rounds at Regional, Special, International, and World Championships.

At all age divisions at tournaments with 65 participants or more, there will be an additional round of Swiss pairings compared to last year’s series. This change was brought about to make it more likely that Trainers who are X-2 (those who only have two losses) will make it into the asymmetrical Top 8. An overall quality of life improvement for those Trainers aiming for top-cut placements and the shot of emerging the Pokémon champion.

Additionally, most tournaments will be broken up into 8 Swiss rounds on day 1 with the Swiss rounds continuing into day 2 leading into the top-cut. This, however, is up to the discretion of each tournament organiser, so it is always recommended to read through the schedule provided for each event.

The final change to the Swiss tournament rounds is that asymmetrical Top 8s are now capped at 16 players. Previously these were capped at 32. However, regarding this change, tournament results and community feedback will continuously be monitored.

Critical State - New End Of Round Procedures

In the 2025 Championship season, when the timer hit zero, Trainers had three additional turns to conclude their current game. If the game did not end with a winner, that game was declared a draw and the match was scored then and there. If a player had 1 win and the other had 0, the player with 1 win  would win the match. However, a score of 0-0 or 1-1 would lead to a tie.

The issue with this method was that under time pressure players would play quickly, however, once time was called, there was technically no time limit for the additional turns which resulted in long, drawn-out matches and more difficult round turnover. To amend this issue, there are two main changes to the end of round procedure.

  1. Instead of +3 turns, players will have only one additional full turn. This means the active player, when time is called, will complete their turn, then the opponent will have their turn. Once that concludes, if there is no winner, that game is considered a draw.
  2. This additional full turn will be covered by a 10 minute “overtime clock”. While it is unlikely that the full 10 minutes will be used, it is a precaution to prevent unnecessary long rounds.

New Trainer Rewards - Re-balancing Championship Points, Ace Trainer Rewards, and Travel Stipends

Also announced were changes to the overall Championship Points and Kickers. Grand Challenges and Global Challenges provide separate rewards per rating zone. This change is to boost smaller rating zones and promote more opportunities to these communities. League Challenge Kickers are being adjusted to better reflect average attendance.

And finally, more Championship Points are being allocated to 9th through 64th place finishes at Championship events.

The Ace Trainer Rewards program returns once again for the 2026 Pokémon Championship Series. Pokémon TCG, Pokémon video game, and Pokémon GO Trainers who earn 200 Championship points, as well as Pokémon UNITE teams who place highly will earn the Ace Trainer title. This title comes with unique rewards to be announced later.

Pokémon Go Trainers can now additionally earn a travel stipend during the 2026 Pokémon Championship Series. The number of players eligible to receive this travel stipend has doubled. Now, the top 8 players on the Pokémon Go Championship Point leader-board during the qualification period are able to earn the travel stipend.

Aeos Reforged - Changes To Pokémon UNITE Championship Series

Invitations are no longer based on Championship Points for Pokémon UNITE. Instead, there are three primary routes to invitation with all qualified teams receiving Travel Awards for the 2026 Pokémon World Championship. Here are the ways to get your invitation:

  1. Reaching the top 2 positions at a Pokémon UNITE Regional League
  2. Winning Aeos Cup at EUIC, Asia Champions League, or the Final Stretch at NACI
  3. Winning a Pokémon UNITE Open Last Chance Qualifier.

Monthly cups are no longer a part of the Pokémon UNITE Championship Series, however, several top teams from each rating zone will still be invited to participate in their respective Regional League.
