Beyond The Horizon - Reign of Jafar Cards to Look Out For

We are now fully into the release of Disney Lorcana’s Reign of Jafar! Just like we did for Archazia’s Island, we’re going to cover some of our favourite cards from Reign of Jafar, where we expect them to be used, and which decks in set 8 we expect them to do well in.

Lady - Decisive Dog

First up we have Lady – Decisive Dog, an inkable 1-cost 0/3 ally. Her first ability Pack Of Her Own says “whenever you play a character, this character gets +1 strength this turn”. This ability then feeds into Take The Lead where “When this character has 3 strength or more, she gains plus 2 lore” allowing her to quest for a total of three.

Lady fits seamlessly into the “Chernadogs” deck archetype that has been seeing quite a bit of success lately. Swarming the board is not hard in the Chernadogs deck and when paired up Tramp – Enterprising Dog, we can see Lady becoming a real lore battery. This version of Lady is also a great shift target for Lady – Miss Park Avenue to really keep up the aggressive pressure.

Lady - Family Dog

This iteration of Lady is another great addition to the Chernadogs deck, but also aggressive decks in general. Being purely Amber, she can slot into any colour combination instead of just Amber/Emerald decks. The biggest draw of Lady – Family Dog is her ability Someone To Care For which says “When you play this character, you may play a character with cost 2 or less for free. Questing for 2 lore is an even bigger up side.

Outside of the Chernadog deck, we can see players playing Doc – Bold Knight in steel decks after dumping their hand onto the field. Or even the new Rhino – One-Sixteenth Wolf to later shift on the next turn. Expect to see Lady in a lot of decks going forward.

Beyond The Horizon

Don’t let the fact that this card is an uncommon fool you, because it’s already making waves. Steel Song on its own would love to make use of this as yet another way to keep up the value and draw cards, but there are so many more decks that would love to run this. If your sapphire opponent has over 10 cards in hand, now they have 3.

Additionally, the Sing Together 7 helps decks that play big units like Maui – Half-Shark and Cinderella – Stouthearted can easily sing this song. What makes this card especially interesting is that after Lorcana rotates out older cards, we expect to see this replacing A Whole New World in many decks.

Into The Unknown

What is not to love about this card? Maybe the fact that it’s locked to exclusively Amethyst/Sapphire decks. We have a 3-cost Inkable Song that puts a chosen exerted character into their player’s inkwell facedown and exerted. Sure, there is the added restriction of having to choose something that’s exerted, but often in the early game things will be exerted anyways.

The threat of running this card could even dissuade players from attacking your allies. When paired with the Belle – Apprentice Inventor, you could sing this as early as turn 2.

Maui - Stubborn Trickster

This is a personal favourite of mine. Maui – Stubborn Trickster is an inkable 6-cost 4/4 ally that quests for 3 lore. He has one of the most versatile abilities I’ve seen on a card yet. What I like about Maui is the deck building flexibility it offers. Most decks have ways to deal with decks that swarm the board with allies, play many items, or sit back and gain lore off of locations. Often these tech cards eat up a lot of deck space and weaken the overall consistency of a deck.

While I feel being 6-cost and needing to be banished is quite slow, the 3 lore it gains each turn is something opponents will likely want to stop. Additionally, being able to answer three major deck archetypes on one card earns Maui a spot on this list. Pairing this up with Bagheera – Guardian Jaguar back to back can devastate most boardstates.

Ludwig Von Drake - All-Around Expert

I personally was very excited when Ludwig Von Drake – All-Around Expert was revealed. An Uninkable 2-cost 1/1 Amber/Sapphire ally that quests for 1 is very unimpressive when it comes to stats, but it has probably one of my favourite abilities I’ve seen on a card yet: Superior Mind.

Superior Mind says “When you play this character, the chosen opponent reveals their hand and discards a non-character card of your choice”. The amount of information you gain is quite powerful.

As early as turn two you have near full information on your opponent’s upcoming few turns, as well as being able to disrupt your opponent’s gameplan quite well. You don’t have to play around cards like Let The Storm Rage On early in the game, can remove card advantage from cards like Friends On The Other Side, take out a Fishbone Quill, or even late in the game remove a Be Prepared from your opponent’s hand. Being able to be put into your inkwell is just icing on the cake.

My only concern is that Amber Sapphire is not an ink combination that we see quite often and will definitely need to be experimented with.

Bambi - Little Prince

I understand that this looks not that amazing, however, I do feel that Bambi – Little Prince is going to start appearing in many decks post rotation. It has the incidental lore gain from simply playing him, and should your opponent not have allies on board, Bambi does sort of protect himself by returning to your hand.

Questing for 3 lore is also nothing to scoff at. I feel that Bambi’s time to shine will be after the rotation happens, however, before then it might see some play over The White Rose.

Tramp - Dapper Rascal

We have yet another powerhouse addition to the popular Chernadogs deck in Tramp – Dapper Rascal. Not only is he inkable as well as playable on turn 4 with shift onto Tramp – Enterprising Dog, but he has probably the best ability any aggro deck can ask for: card draw.

With a beefy willpower stat of 8, your opponents are likely going to have to either spend a turn or two to remove Tramp, or remove your other allies and allow you to draw more cards and maintain the pressure. Amber/Emerald is shaping up to be a real force to be reckoned with.

Mushu - Your Worst Nightmare

Just as Archazia’s Island gave us more tools for the Ruby/Steel challenge deck, Reign of Jafar gives us another tool for that archetype. Mushu – Your Worst Nightmare is an inkable 6-cost 4/6 Ruby/Steel ally that quests for two lore.

While it has Shift 4 to be played on curve with Mushu – Fast-Talking Dragon, his biggest strength is his All Fired Up ability: “Whenever you play another character, they gain Rush, Reckless, and Evasive this turn”. This turns every single character you own into removal. While the Reckless aspect seems a bit unfortunate, it really goes a long way to get challenges out fast and wrack in the lore by doing so.
